Things have gone from bad to worse, but when they give him a gallows haircut, he knows that his end is near. As in life, nothing is easy in death either; there are many diversions planned, he suffering for the pleasure of others of course, before he is finally executed. He’ll be put to death (or near-death, as victims can stay alive for days afterward) using an ancient and brutal method previously considered too “cruel and unusual,” but has since been enthusiastically revived. And in death, as in life, there are always surprises.
